02 Feb 2022 (edited 06 Feb 2022)This was mostly a very pleasant route through part of Airedale, obviously designed by someone who knows the area. It leaves Keighley through two parks, Cliffe Castle being particularly good, with a café and museum and other facilities. The map gives the impression it is necessary to use a staircase after rounding the corner of the museum building, but it is better to continue past the building and use the slope. From here, there is a pleasant walled and wooded (sometimes muddy) path past a sports field, into Utley. Utley has some nice cottages, a pub and a chippy (where lunchtime openings appear to be infrequent).
From Utley, a single-track road leads over the railway, dual carriageway, and River Aire, to the golf course. The restaurant here is open to anyone (I think it’s called Lucullan and looks a bit fine-dining, but the receptionist there was very welcoming despite my muddy boots!)
The path across the golf course is obvious, unlike the next section between the canal and golf course. This section was a bit wild and looked as if it could get very overgrown in summer. I think I would recommend taking the right fork from the golf course to Booth’s Swing Bridge, then using the canal towpath to reach the lane that branches off to Lower Holden Farm. Unfortunately, this has the disadvantage of a short steep slope down from the canal, as shown in one of my photos. This section lost my rating a *.
The farm lane was rather mucky (as from cows) at the start, but was well surfaced. After passing a group of houses, a well-signed footpath heads across fields directly towards Silsden, which is visible in the distance. I was anticipating boggy flood-plain fields, but they were surprisingly easy, sheep-grazed and smooth, with little stone-step stiles dotting the way.
Just after Hainsworth Farm, the footpath goes on the other side of the hedge (not the lane), skirting the start of the small industrial estate. The route then goes through a short pedestrian tunnel beneath the canal, and follows back-roads along the beck into Silsden.
