Description
This is the alternative route that I walked, in particular, to avoid the blocked access of SilIlk One at High Brunthwaite. I have also ironed out some minor inaccuracies that became apparent on the ground, and simplified the route into Silsden

27 Sep 2023Leaving Ilkley, the route headed fairly steeply up the pavement of a tree-lined housing road. Soon after crossing a cattle grid (gate available) the first footpath was not signposted, but I knew I was aiming for the white house on the hill, which is White Wells. It’s worth looking inside here when it’s open. The footpath up the hill was quite steep, with steps in places, but the view of Ilkley was worth the climb.
At the point marked Spout on the OS map a small stream crossed the path. It was easy to step over, but it might need fording, or use of stepping stones, depending on recent rainfall.
There were quite a lot of footpaths over the moorland, but this route stuck to the slightly lower one that climbs only gradually. After the footbridge over Black Beck, I passed the Swastika Stone which is an elaborate Cup and Ring type of ancient rock carving and nothing to do with Nazis. In fact, there were a lot of rock carvings of various ages on or near the route, as well as some memorials.
The main part of the route was pretty straightforward. There were awesome views over Wharfedale and the large village of Addingham. The moorland was covered with heather and I heard grouse. There were good gritstone rock climbing opportunities if you wanted them, but they weren’t necessary for the walk! They would have made good picnic spots though.
Eventually the other side of the ridge appeared, and I could see Keighley and half of the Ilkley to Keighley Slow Ways route that had I walked a few months ago. The route down off the ridge to Lightbank Lane, was steep. I didn’t see any cows but there were droppings. When I reached the road, I saw a hare.
I crossed a couple of fields, and then there were quiet tarmacked lanes for about a mile, then some suburban streets and off-road footpaths to reach the end point in Silsden.
Both ends of the route had good ranges of shops, cafés and pubs, but the bulk of the route was remote from any facilities. It was rather gorgeous though.
