Description

This is a version of Sherad one that avoids Harridge Wood, which it is not recommended to visit at the moment due to Ash die back (see https://www.somersetwildlife.org/nature-reserves/harridge-wood for any updates).

I have kept to the original route as much as possible, diverting along footpaths and small lanes to the east of the wood itself

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

08 May 2023 Spring

I successfully walked this route yesterday. On the whole it is a great walk, across some attractive countryside. In particular the walk along limekiln lane around the edge of Harridge Wood is lovely - giving you a taste of the wonderful Harridge Wood, without actually going in.

It is, however, a route which takes a bit of experience to thoroughly enjoy. I encountered electric fences, difficult and damaged stiles, cows, alpacas, horses, loud farmers dogs and some strangely aggressive sheep! In places, it follows footpaths that do not seem that well used, so can be a little hard to follow. It can also be a little bit difficult to navigate through the Disused Workings near Haydon if you don't know the area - though this is largely an inconvenience rather than a real problem. All of these challenges were on the parts of the route that is shared with sherad one, so have not been caused by avoiding Harridge Wood.

On the other hand, there are some really lovely stretches - the walk through Loocombe Wood in particular was very beautiful.

Overall, I think this is a pretty good slow way. It is fairly direct, and I didn't encounter any show-stopping obstacles. if Harridge Wood becomes available again, then sherad one would almost certainly be preferable, being slightly shorter and the woods themselves are one of the best in the area. I'm giving 3 stars to reflect all of this - the original (when it is available again) would probably be a 4* route.
