06 Oct 2023Lovely walk from Settle to Hellifield.
We took the train to Settle and walked back. The views are great - especially from the top of the hill.
(About that hill... the first few km out of Settle are uphill, some of it quite steep, but it's on tarmac and decent tracks.)
We walked it in a little over two hours - it took us 3 overall, with a picnic on top of the hill and a pint in the pub in Long Preston.

15 Jul 2022I've walked this route from Hellifield to Settle twice. Easy to follow. A few gates, no stiles. Mostly on old tracks, a lot of it tarmacadam. Great views. A cracking pub at Hellifield (black horse). Train stations and bus stops at either end makes it an easy circular.

20 May 2022The route leaves Settle past the beautiful old museum building, then climbs steadily up a road that is pretty much car-free and has excellent views back over Settle. It then becomes a wide track and continues to climb, with views back over Ingleborough, and it eventually levels out over moorland. The highest point is reached and Ingleborough becomes hidden, to be replaced by Pendle Hill ahead, which gets closer as the route descends towards Long Preston. It is lovely up here with the sound of the wind and the larks, and views across the River Ribble. Long Preston is about two thirds of the way, and has a couple of pubs and a station nearby.
After skirting Long Preston there are a few lanes and fields to cross. There is a confusing point at OS Grid Ref: SD 84700 57886, where there are three gates and it looks at first as if the Public Right of Way has a Private sign and padlock blocking it, but the left hand gate will take you onto the correct side of the wall. Fairly soon after this the route goes up through another field, Nursery Hill, with a lovely view over the pretty Hellifield Station, with Pendle Hill beyond. The PRoW and Slow Way move away from the railway line slightly, but the more trodden path hugs the fence next to the railway line. The two ways are close together and arrive at a gate to take you under the railway and in to Helliwell.
This is an excellent route and I really enjoyed it.
