Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

06 Jan 2022This is one of two indirect routes both of 5 miles (8km). I chose Selkir1 because it passes through the urban areas of Nuncargate and Annesley Woodhouse serving more potential Slow Way users along mostly surfaced paths. From Woodhouse a short section of narrow busy road then across fields to the edge of Selston.
From Kirkby the route heads south along Lindley's Lane passing a building with a large sign Dacrylate and 'By Royal Appointment' what do they supply to Her Majesty, I wonder? The road changes to a bridleway at some paving to suggest pedestrian priority then back to tarmac, excluded from houses on either side. Strange crossings prevent traffic turning while allowing pedestrian access and car drivers are perhaps unsure who has priority. An attempt to make this a walking route to Portland Park but why wasn't the path integrated into the surrounding development?
The park offers a cafe, The Wild Rabbit just off route. From here a field edge path has been improved with a stone surface to reach the well stocked recreation area at Nuncargate. There are shops along the main road. The route does not use James Street, it takes a footpath behind the houses and climbs to Wesley Street and more shops on Forest Road.
Forest Road is a busy cut through for traffic and when it becomes Salmon Lane the pavement disappears. Grass verges offer refuge but it may be necessary to cross a number of times. Fortunately the footpath is reached before the road makes a double blind band, phew!
The walked path heading right across the ploughed field heads for a waymark post but this appears to be off the route shown on OS. The one stile is at the crossing of the Cuttail Brook then a climb across pasture with a nice view over a private lake. Crossing the motorway the path uses a farm track before meeting Salmon Lane for a pavement walk to the Selston meeting point.
