One Woman Walks

03 Aug 2025 Summer

Gorgeous route, easy to follow.
Criss crosses the main road a lot with some short sections on the main road with no verge which is unnerving but mostly gorgeous and simple walking.

11 Jun 2025 Spring

I did this walk on a pleasant sunny day starting in Sedbergh, following a night of heavy rain, so I was a bit apprehensive about potential flooding, as I would be close to the Clough River for most of the way. The river was quite full, which made for some good rapids. The views across the wild-flower meadows to the Howgills were beautiful in the sunshine, and the riverside path was lovely.
It’s a pity Farfield Mill is so near the start of the route, because I know it has good quality displays of local art and crafts for sale, as well as a good café.
After Dovecote Gill, the views along Garsdale were quite dramatic and beautiful, and the view back to Sedbergh was good too.
The path from High Fawes down to the minor road was a little tricky to find, but it was there okay. It involved a field with peaceful cows and no visible footpath, and then an initially bracken-filled, then steep, woodland path.
I reached the river again through several fields and it continued to be lovely, although a bit wet in places, after all the rain. There were a lot of streams tumbling, even cascading, down the hillside to the valley, and at one point after Swarthgill House, I reached a challenging river crossing. I think it would normally be fairly narrow and shallow with a couple of stepping stones, but for me, it was about two metres wide a good ten centimetres of fast flowing water over the stones. I had no choice but to take off my trail shoes and socks!
Immediately after this, the map shows the footpath crossing the field to reach the road, but on the ground, it hugs the river. Wetly, on this occasion!
The footpath leaving the road again, at Slack, was hidden by vegetation, and the footpath leaving the road immediately after the road bridge over the river, was through someone’s garden! The Garsdale meeting point is a bit odd, on a stretch of road with nothing but a no-longer-existing telephone box!
This was a completely beautiful walk, but I recommend doing it when it has been dry!.
