Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

19 Aug 2021An easy to follow, calm path that runs alongside the river Stort for the whole route. For the most part it's a calm and serene walk, however some sections are less so (to be expected given it's a stone's throw from Stansted Airport!). The path can be narrow and uneven, and most definitely muddy after heavy rain. Once, in winter, it was completely impassable for me, even in decent gear.

20 Jun 2021Lovely route following alongside the Stort river navigation. Starts and ends at railway stations.
At the Bishop's Stortford end there are major building works and the section of footpath is diverted through the railway carpark.
Cost of train is £3.80 (off peak adult) [June 2021], trains about every 30 minutes.

07 May 2021A pleasant and straightforward route alongside the River Stort. The scenery is varied and interesting and in places a feeling of being 'away from it all'. The track is rough but in general provides easy walking. It can become very muddy in wet weather and between Spellbrook and Pig Lane leakage from a meadow has eroded three channels (about 1 metre wide) across the path which may present an obstacle to some.
Depending on day and time the final road crossing can be hazardous but can be avoided by turning right and taking the controlled crossing.

04 Jun 2023UPDATE: 04/06/2023
The 'obstacle' have been repaired and include drainage which should ensure the paths integrity. This work must have been completed within recent weeks.
The work has been carried out over recent weeks. -

11 Aug 2023Hi John,
The route is used by cyclist of all ages all year round. So yes it is possible to cycle it. The route is off-road and narrow and sections can be very muddy especially after heavy or prolonged rain. The most popular bikes are mountain bikes and hybrids and now a few gravels. It is well used by walkers and runners so courtesy and patience is needed. Enjoy -
