Review of Slow Ways route Salste one (Saltcoats to Stevenston).
I walked this route in reverse (Stevenston to Saltcoats) on a bright, cold day in January 2023. It is a short, simple and direct route between these two North Ayrshire towns. It follows the main road for its entire length, making it a bit noisy and fairly uninteresting. An alternative might have been to follow the minor road on the other side of Auchenharvie Golf Course. This would have added a little variety to the route but would also have made it longer. A little care is required where the route crosses the footbridge over the B780 as the way up onto the footbridge is not completely clear from the route map. There are also steep steps which may be a barrier to some, but an easy alternative would be to simply cross the road at ground level. All in all a simple and clear route with no particular issues.
