Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A really good route in a beautiful part of the South Hams. There are some interesting and varied landscape features, passing through pretty villages.
It is not suitable for wheeled users. There are steps, stiles, stepping stones and steep gradients, typical of the area.
The way includes a short hop on a ferry between Salcombe and East Portlemouth. The ferry runs all year round, every 30 minutes in winter.
The route follows quiet lanes initially, very little traffic. The road has a couple of tidal fords but there are footpaths on the inland side to avoid getting wet feet.
At Waterhead the route turns onto an unmetalled road which fords the creek with stepping stones for walkers. A previous review says these are submerged at high tide so check tide times. It was low tide when I walked it and the stepping stones were dry.
It is a steep walk up the holloway from the creek but lovely views from the top. It then follows quiet lanes through South Pool - the church, which is part of the old Court Barton, is worth a detour and you can then follow an alternative path behind the church which rejoins the slowway back on the road.
The road down into Frogmore is a little busier but no off road alternative. (There’s a good cafe at Frogmore).
After a short section of pavement along the main road, the route is back onto quiet lanes to Sherford. There’s no refreshment opportunities at Sherford and not sure any public transport either (Frogmore closest) but I walked Kinshe back to Kingsbridge which is only just over 3 miles and very enjoyable (but steep in places!).

This is a nice route - mostly along lanes, which were very quiet south of South Pool; slightly wider and busier towards Frogmore, but still fine for walking along. Bear in mind, the stepping stones at the end of Waterhead Creek (pictures 2 and 3) are submerged at high tide. These pictures were taken midway between low and high tide; I’m not sure how long they’re submerged for - perhaps 3-4 hours, though for some of that time you could probably find a way around. Also, in South Pool a couple of tracks provide an alternative route around the church.
