24 May 2023 (edited 25 May 2023)Route uses the Harcamlow Way which is well marked and maintained. It is not difficult to see on the ground. The route goes alongside a busy road at the beginning for about a mile when leaving Saffron Walden and is not pleasant but is safe in that the pavement is of sufficient width and extends for the whole distance. I felt that this was more than compensated for by the rest of the route and is the only way to get on to the Harcamlow Way without a long detour.
I have suggested an alternative route, sent separately, to avoid the necessity of walking along the busy Newport Road near Debden where there is no pavement or usable verge. This alternative route does not involve a significant change to the overall mileage. The photos show the point where the new route crosses Newport Road.
There is a Post Office Stores, bus stop and pub halfway at Debden if people wanted to make it a shorter walk, otherwise there is a bus service back to Saffron Walden from Thaxted.

15 May 2021An otherwise lovely route invalidated because it includes:
- a footpath that has been diverted
- a short but potentially hazardous section of road walking
- a brick wall that blocks the route
The route would ideally be updated as these issues can easily be avoided.
Would otherwise have awarded four stars.
