Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

David Sanderson

16 May 2021 Spring

I did this walk from Lichfield to Rugeley. It's a generally safe and pleasant walk and is well drawn but there are too many problems with it for me to recommend it.
1 I had to divert off it twice. Bishops Walk is temporarily closed in Lichfield (this should only be a problem until early June 2021) and more importantly a section of the walk at Armitage takes you along a footpath (marked on the OS map between SK 0804 1626 and SK 0837 1623) on the non-towpath side at the back of the Armitage Shanks factory which no longer exists and is impassable
2 It was most certainly not direct. It inexplicably follows a dog leg via two sides of a right angled triangle at Longdon Green which is a minor annoyance compared to the section between Armitage and Rugeley. There, having joined the Trent and Mersey Canal which would take you straight to the destination via a very pleasant walk, instead it diverts off across the River Trent through frequently flooded fields to outskirts of the village of Mavesyn Ridware (via a cattle farm but no shops). The route then took me around Rugeley across field then via a sharp ascent up what appeared to be an old slag heap (mining was once the main industry) and brought me into the far side of Rugeley (from Lichfield). I suspect the intention of this was to deliver the walker to Rugeley Trent Valley Railway Station. Crossing a few busy A roads to get to the canal I found myself walking down the Trent and Mersey (in the direction of Lichfield!) to get to the meeting point.
3 It appeared to be designed to avoid amenities. In the nearly 18km between Lichfield and Rugeley I passed within 100m of one supermarket and walked past one fish and chip shop and one pub (all in Handsacre). Please use Ruglic Two.
