Description
This route is a slight modification to the original "Roybun" route, but witha couple of minor improvements.
1. There are new housing estates both sides of the road at the start of the original route which means walking on a rather busy road. My suggested alteration uses just over a mile of attractive small roads with foothpaths, and joins the original route at "The Causeway".
2. The original route includes a detour to Chipping and along the footpath of the busy A10 trunk road. I assume this is to take advantage of the Countryman Inn. This pub is now closed, so my suggested alteration cuts out this detour and passes the attractive "Capons Wood"

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

25 Jun 2022This route passes through some beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, and shares some sections of long distance footpaths such as the Icknield Way and Chain Walk.
The route alternates between open rolling countryside and covered footpaths (please see photo's), which makes things comfortable if it's very hot or very wet.
The first few miles from the town of Royston up to Therfield are the hardest part of the walk - you can reward yourself with refreshments at the Fox and Duck in
Therfield.
Where the route goes across fields the local farmers are generally helpful and will clear public rights of way of any crops. There is a field (currently broad beans) near to Cherry Orchard which has not been cleared but a path around northern edge the field is clear. In winter the routes across fields are sometimes hard to see after ploughing so look out for signposts at the other end of the field you are crossing.
There are route labels shown in many places (see photo) but please note there are a lot of public footpaths in this area so take care to ensure you are on the right path.
Enjoy the "last homely house" as you leave Buckland! (last photo).
