Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

22 Jun 2023 (edited 16 Dec 2023)I tested this over a couple of visits, in a variety of directions while I've been looking for a route that actually works. There are some really lovely parts of this walk, it has a wonderful chain of green spaces along the two rivers, but also a lot of route planning limitations further east. There's an accessibility gap to the E and N of the greenspaces around Belhus Country Park. I see how someone would have hoped this was a good possibility. It has several serious problems though, two are serious enough that the route just doesn't work as a Slow Way. Hopefully RomSou 2 fixes those big problems and several minor niggles, but it hasn't been fully tested.
1) The section just east of the M25 leading to the footbridge is impassable. Little Belhus Country Park is still being converted from landfill and this bit has no public access.
2) The route line doesn't fit the paths in Cely Woods and Warwick Woods and isn't possible to follow.
3) Walking along Warwick Lane was bad. Really uncomfortable, even in a high vis cycling vest. I won't ever do it again and would not recommend anyone else to. Berwick Pond Road traffic was lighter but visibilty around corners was worse.
4) The path up the E side of the River Beam/Rom gets pretty nettle-y as you go north and there's one point where it's pretty muddy and very close to a drop down the bank. Not great if the vegetation is high and you cannot see properly. The only bit of physically worrying off-road path on the route. There is a better way (per a dog walker).
5) Walking along Rom Valley Way and Waterloo Rd north of the hospital is noisy. You could just go up South St from Rush Green Rd.
Photos are of Little Belhus Country Park where the landfill is still apparent. When I, er, accidentally wandered into the closed section late one summer evening.
