Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

23 Feb 2022What looked on the map like a fine off-road route which avoids the busy A58 along a dismantled railway line between two old mill towns, following the River Ryburn mostly through deciduous woodland, in fact turns out to be for the most part on a wet, wintry day a squelch through quagmire.
The problem being that the old railway line passes through an impressively deep rock cutting for about half of its length - which has no drainage. In the boggiest bits the muddy water will even go over your wellies. These are avoidable to some extent if you climb up the sides of the cutting and then follow instead the network of obviously well-walked muddy paths that run along the top.
But if you also add in a section where, amongst some dilapidated huts, horse boxes and rubbish lying about everywhere, there has been a fair bit of flytipping, it all leads to the impression that, certainly in winter, this is a disappointing walk which can be surprisingly hard going in places.
I hope others who may walk and review this route in spring or summer will find it an altogether more pleasant experience!.
