Description
A tweaked version of Rayroc One; it takes on board a suggestion made in the Rayroc One photo survey that the route at Hockley woods would be more direct and less muddy if taken through the woods rather than around them. When walking the route we concurred it would be an improvement.
Very quiet green route between the two towns, some urban at either end. Nothing strenuous.
No refreshment opportunities on the way, but Hockley woods has a bench for picnics, and plenty of cafes and pubs at either end

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

13 Apr 2024I walked in early April on a fine day travelling east-west from Rochford to Rayleigh. The Hockley Woods section is a real highlight, it's full of tantalising off-route paths so you need to be determined if you want to head straight through. (I also checked out the section of Rayroc one which differs from this route. It seemed good to me, I could see where paths had been wet previously, as when it was surveyed, but they were dry when I walked and I had no problems.).

19 Oct 2023Confession: I'm open to challenge on my 5-star rating, as this is the closest Slow Way to where I was born and I was pleasantly surprised how attractive it was. As it connects Rochford District's two towns while barely touching its notoriously busy roads, this route also symbolises an alternative approach to things.
Rayleigh's picture-postcard parish church is near the start and is well-worth a peek (photos 1 & 2) before you head through the outskirts to pick up the path (photos 3 & 4) leading to Hockley Woods. Looking out to the South-East you may see the centre of Southend in the distance. Once through the woods and across the bottom-part of Hawkwell there's one last chunk of farmland (photo 5) before you skirt a new housing estate, pass under the line between London Liverpool Street and Southend Victoria, and are almost at your destination.

17 Oct 2023Good 4+ star route - I took one off cos it’s a bit traffic-y at the Rochford end, maybe I’m being harsh?
We walked on a glorious warm autumn day, Rayleigh to Rochford. It’s a delightful quiet green route most of the way, no refreshment stops, so we started with second breakfast at Rayleigh before setting off. Paths are clear and easy to follow, across fields and through woods.
We stopped off to look inside Rayleigh church as we went by, well worth it if open.
At Rochford the tea shops are in the town centre, which is a short walk on from the end point at the station. It’s a quiet town and shops/cafes close early.
