Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Jun 2023From the ferry station to the starting point of the Old Man of Hoy trail (Rackwick). Slightly hilly but mostly flat in the mid-section. Windy due to lack of trees but an enjoyable walk. Can stop in the mid-way poit to see Dwarfie Stane (15 min detour).

27 May 2023Easy, sociable hill walk from the boat at Moaness to the beautiful Rackwick bay. Play spot the eagle as you go, and possibly even bivvy in the bothy at the bay. Simple to follow, could be a little damp, but wonderful.

10 May 2023 (edited 11 May 2023)Rcommended. This is the higher road to Rackwick for hikers in decent boots but easy for a hill walk (assuming summer conditions and reasonable visibility). A mile gently uphill on the road from the dock at Moaness is followed by a short section of track which leads to a little loch. From there on it is a usually obvious sandy, rocky and/or occasionally slightly boggy footpath which heads over a very gently inclined pass between the hills, eventually arriving at the road into Rackwick via a streamside path flanked by low willow bushes. There are occasional stone markers and bits of wooden slatting to help with navigation and crossing some of the wetter bits. We walked it after a very dry Spring in the area but it’s probably a lot wetter at times.
Lovely walk and this area is great for birds. Curlews making loads of noise at the Moaness end today and great skuas flying overhead. Rackwick Bay, beyond the end of the route, is wonderful. Carry food and water. There is a little cafe near the Moaness end which was open today but nothing at the Rackwick end.

23 Jun 2023I'm not sure you can get to the Dwarfie Stane from this hill route. You perhaps are thinking of the road route....?
