03 Aug 2022I walked this route from Pyecombe to Lewes on a very hot day. It was a beautiful walk that mostly follows the South Downs Way. The views from Ditchling Beacon and Black Cap are stunning! The dew pond by Ditching is very pretty. There are some woods when you approach Black Cap which make for a great shaded picnic spot. Would defo recommend.

24 Jul 2022Walked this route from Lewes to Pyecombe in the summer and it was a beautiful, enjoyable route. The route out of Lewes is fairly quiet and then you're rewarded with great views of the South Downs when you get to Black Cap and Ditchling Beacon. If it's hot you can even get a little treat from the ice cream van at the top. Great time out if you want a walk with good views and a decent distance.

07 Nov 2021Walked on the afternoon of 5th November 2021 - a Slow Way for a purpose. Walking is the only way into the town from mid-afternoon onwards as roads are closed, and trains don't stop to reduce the crowds for the bonfire night celebrations.
From Pyecombe, the route follows the South Downs Way, crossing the busy A273 (take care) then climbing up past the golf course. From here, along the top of the scarp, with views of the Clayton Windmills to the left, the walk takes in Ditchling Beacon, Blackcap and Mount Harry. It then starts its descent past the old Lewes racecourse and Landport Bottom into Lewes.
Views are awesome along the whole route. Paths are wide and easily followed. There are number of gates suitable for bikes to pass through. The walking surface is chalk and flint tracks through short grassland grazed by sheep and cattle. There are no stiles.
Looking down into Lewes from above the slope of Landport Bottom you can visualise the events of the Battle of Lewes in 1264 when Simon de Montfort defeated Henry III.
The walk is well-traced on the map and easy to follow. Refreshment opportunities are limited and other services are non-existent. There is sometimes an ice cream van at Ditchling Beacon and a coffee caravan open at Streathill.
