Description
An alternative using Sasumner's suggestions to improve access. I rerouted the most southerly rail-side footpath as I guessed it to be the most likely to be overgrown, and avoided the blocked access between Preston Station and Avenham Park

16 Feb 2022Leaving Preston via the car park and East Cliff Road, Avenham Park is accessed via some steps and sloping paths. The direct route to the bridge over the River Ribble from the station is blocked by a fence. It is also higher than the park footpaths and you need to use a path sloping up to it, with a cycle sign and cycle barriers on it. The cycle track then follows the line of a former railway, raised above the surroundings, and is popular and very pleasant.
Going along the road into Penwortham Lane, there are a lot of new houses being built. Immediately after crossing the west coast mainline railway is a gate into a muddy field footpath which was guarded by two horses when I used it! The footpath hugs the railway fence crossing stiles and a nasty small gap (50cm) between an electric fence and the railway fence. A gate at the end leads you through a clearly-defined path to the road.
A few more quiet roads (with a bench near the middle) take the route to the second rail-side field crossing of this Slow Way, which is a bit more pleasant, finishing around the side of an industrial park, and onto the road again.
This route avoids a potentially overgrown footpath (in PreLev One) by following the roads into Leyland, past a few reminders of the days of Leyland Trucks.
The first third of this route from Preston is very pleasant, but the rest can be a bit tedious, but it works.
