I have shared this route because it is more direct, lower level and an easier walk than the over-the-hill options, heading via Selworthy Church and Horner valley

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

08 Apr 2024 (edited 10 Apr 2024) Spring

This is a completely different, shorter and much more domestic route between these two towns, part of it through the National Trust-owned Holnicote Estate - now home of a river plain rewilding project and a small population of reintroduced beavers. There is a mixture of walking on quiet roads, footpaths across fields, and suburban greenways, with some lovely views over to Horner Hill along the way. I give it four stars rather than five because of the road walking.

It starts out of Porlock using a quiet lane to reach West Luccombe. There is a little shop in the campsite at Burrowhayes if you are already hungry. From here, the route takes a pretty footpath through the fields across the valley towards and around Holnicote house. Once across the (fast) A39 road, there is a kilometre of slightly duller on-road and moderate hill-climbing to reach the hamlet of Selworthy, but it is worth the effort for the view and a visit to the very pretty church. There is a tea room and shop at the National Trust garden at the corner of the road. From here the walking is along quiet lanes, sometimes with good views out, as well as pathways across fields and via woodland edges to reach the suburbs of Minehead. The way into town is on suburban paths through a gardeny stream valley, finishing with a stroll down Minehead's varied main shopping drag, which will be lively with visitors in the summer season.

Just to note that I walked most of this route in the early autumn of 2023 when it was quite dry, so the 'Spring' tag on this review is inaccurate and I expect there would be some mud to mention if I had walked it today.
