Description
A revised route from Polegate to Eastbourne, avoiding roads where possible and following existing trails The Wealdway and South Downs Way. A bit of a longer way around but should be much more pleasant to walk!

02 Sep 2023A much more interesting route to take between Polegate and Eastbourne!
There is a fair bit of road walking at the start and end, with the middle section along reasonably obvious footpaths and bridlepaths.
The climb up from Lower Willingdon to Willingdon Hill is fairly steep and the bridlepaths on the top were quite wet and muddy.

29 Jun 2023This is a far more appealing route than POLEAS1. I tried it out at the end of June, walking from Polegate to Eastbourne which provides the best arrival.
The route uses a pavement beside a quiet lane to get to Wannock at the edge of the Downs. From here a field path leads to the edge of a cemetery then heads straight up onto the Downs. This is quite a steep climb. Once on top, the walk follows a short section of the Weald Way, then meets up with the South Downs Way which it follows all the way into Eastbourne.
This is the eastern limit of the South Downs and the views are marvelous in all directions. There are several kissing gates along the way but no stiles. There were plenty of sheep around but no cattle this time. The route is about 7 miles and took me about two and a half hours. There are no facilities along the way.
The only issue I had was when I downloaded the route file from the Slow Ways website, I could not open the file using the OS app so I had to plot it manually onto the physical map. Not a big deal as the route is pretty direct.

09 Sep 2023NB: It seems that the OS app facility to open downloaded routes is only open to subscribers. As I am "old school" I tend to buy physical copies of OS maps with the download version.
