06 Jan 2024 Winter

January 2024. Direction: Llanharry to Pencoed.

This was the first fine day after an excessive period of rain at the end of 2023 and early 2024, so it very muddy and wet. The green lane leading out of Llanharry was a mud bath and needed a lot of chicanery to dodge the deeper puddles. The lane that it emerges on to had become a lake after all the rain, so I needed to make a short detour here. It looked like several feet deep, judging by the level of the water in the adjoining fields. In drier weather, this would be a lovely walk, but best to avoid after excessive rainfall.

Walked from Pencoed to Llanharry. This route starts off with a few slightly dodgy crossings of quite busy roads, but it's fine once you get past Felindre Road. Even though there is a lot of road walking, it's all on very quiet lanes - only a few cars passed me. Fairly easy to navigate and all stiles in a good state of repair. All in all, a very enjoyable walk.

It’s the second time I’ve reviewed this route but at a different time of year. This is a perfect route for the time I had available today. Within 10 minutes I had walked out of Pencoed and was in the peaceful countryside. Despite being a lot of road walking I didn’t see a single car or human being (once out of the settlements).

The condition of the route hasn’t materially changed with the exception of a lane being flooded and a bit of creative thinking was needed to avoid getting too wet!

Llanharry is a nice end point with a church to wander around, cafe and a few convenience shops.

Mostly off road or along very quiet country lanes. All paths were accessible and reasonably easy to navigate.

Photo 1 - Pencoed with excellent links to public transport and a ranges of shops, cafes and pubs to visit.

Photo 2 - easy walking to the western edge of Pencoed.

Photo 3 - the ancient church at Llanilid

Photo 4 - old tracks from one settlement to another. Long ago replaced with bypasses and newer roads.

Photo 5 - off road hollow with ancient broad leaf woodland comprising of oak, hazel, beech and sycamore.
