Description

I walked this route from Oldham to Grotton. The route had to be changed in Oldham because the footbridge over Oldham Way has been removed and a new signalised junction created a short distance away with full pedestrian facilities. This change of route has the advantage of passing the Mumps tram and bus interchange. Apart from Oldham town centre the route follows the track bed of a former railway closed in the 1960s. It is well maintained and suitable for walkers and wheelers. Some sections are used by horses. It has some signage and is easy to follow. I agree with the first reviewer that at the Grotton end the route should continue along the former railway track to what was Grotton Station. I also agree that there are two uncontrolled crossings of Oldham Road which is not ideal. Other road crossings are minor or have pedestrian facilities. I am not certain that the unlit sections would be safe to use at night

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route from Oldham to Grotton (Springhead is not the correct terminus). The route leaves Oldham and passes the tram/bus interchange at Mumps then via a signal controlled junction across Oldham Way to join the trackbed of a former railway closed in the 1960s. It is well maintained and suitable for walkers and wheelers. Some sections are used by horses. It has some signage and is easy to follow. There are two uncontrolled crossings of Oldham road which is not ideal. Other road crossings are minor or have pedestrian facilities. I am not certain that the unlit sections would be safe at night.
