A fairly easy-going walk in comparison to what I've done previously, I would recommend this walk to anyone who enjoys a walk around Rutland Water as I would say that was the highlight, otherwise it was fairly average and the accuracy of some of the route was so-so.

Thanks for the review. I see you mentioned so-so accuracy - I replotted the route as OakSta two, so a quick review of that version would be very helpful, as I tried pretty hard to get it right, and it would be good to get the better plotted version verified.

13 Mar 2024 (edited 14 Mar 2024) Winter

Walked from Oakham to Stamford, navigated using the SlowWays Android beta test app. Almost an excellent route, but badly let down by careless GPX plotting. The worst error is at the Whitwell car park, where going north along the access road (Bull Brig Lane) does not lead back to the cycle track - the supposed path is a private drive which has private signs at both ends and at least one locked gate (see attached pictures). Very few of the waypoints in the eastern half are exactly on the paths. I have submitted a better plotted version as OakSta two, and will post a longer review with pictures there. I hope the other reviewers of this route will consider reviewing it, as I am not happy with this GPX file being verified.

I walked from Stamford to Oakham, i.e. east to west. The Tickencote to Empingham stretch is pleasant but the trek around the Anglia Water car parks and cycling routes around Rutland Water are a little tedious, though safe and off road. The road walking from Stamford to Great Casterton and from Rutland Water into Oakham is also not great. However the route serves its purpose - it gets you from Stamford to Oakham should you want to do that. And if you are a fan of huge reservoirs-cum-water-sports-resorts (I personally dislike Rutland Water) then you will enjoy the walk more than I did. On a positive note, there are plenty of refreshment opportunities en route - pub at Great Casterton, OK Diner at Tickencote, the Village Shop at Empingham, and the multiple cafes in the car parks around Rutland Water.

I agree with most of your comments, but you missed the error in the GPX plot east of Whitwell car park, which in my view means that this route should not have been verified, as it is particularly misleading when walking from Oakham towards Stamford. I have submitted a new version that is more accurately plotted throughout, and hope that you will consider reviewing it.

Good route, a bit overgrown on the Rutland Round. Lovely walk through Rutland water.
