10 May 2023 (edited 11 May 2023) Spring

Walked from Norton Canes to Burntwood. An excellent route, with a couple of short muddy sections. The sections past Chasewater and across the heath are very enjoyable.

From the meeting point outside the Co-Op in Norton Canes we cross Brownhills Road and head down the hill, then take the surfaced path left into the trees. Beyond Norton East Road it is unsurfaced and muddy in places. The GPX line is good here - the official right of way plotting isn't. The path is forced right by the lake, and we take the wide surfaced path that follows the railway sharp left beyond the level crossing. Just beyond the lakeside halt, our track leaves the railway right to cross an open heath, rejoining the railway at Chasewater Heath station. From here the walk into Burntwood follows the wide cycletrack along Milestone Way, and at the second roundabout we head half left up High Street, then cross Cannock Road to the meeting point where there are benches outside the shopping centre.

I walked Norton Canes to Burntwood. The walk starts along the same route as Norbro. There is a warning of cattle grazing but none were see. The paths are popular and busy. A cafe at Chasewater Heath station may temp a break if you are on a leisure walks. The final stretch is along a good roadside pavement.

The meeting place at Norton Canes is very pleasant and well kept. The exit is on a safe roadside pavement and then a tarmac cycle track on the bed of a rail route. This does become a loose stone surface but still good. No trains running today so safe to use the gated crossing

Turning left along a good wide path that the map wrongly suggests is a narrow spit of land close to water either side. A short narrow bridge is the only restriction. A kissing gate leads to the heath where cattle may be encountered.

After crossing the rail line a second time the route is then along a safe roadside footway which passes a large supermarket before arriving at the meeting point which has seats with buses and a coffee shop close by.

Chapeau! I had wondered how this short route would be, as the first third of it follows a straight main road through Burntwood. The pavement is wide so although not really pleasant it is direct and safe. The route then reaches Chasewater Country Park and the cafe at Chasewater Heaths Station (part of the stream railway which runs around the outside of the lake). My worry that no beauty would feature in this walk was soon put to rest. A dirt track takes you through gentle open countryside, popular with dog walkers. Not long into the walk you get views direct across Chasewater itself towards the south banks. Sadly you have to leave the bankside, cross the rail line and leave the park after Norton Lakeside Halt and follow the path out of the park, via a wooded path. The route through Norton Canes is direct and easy to navigate to the meeting point. In the rainstorm that greeted my arrival I was pleased to only have to walk about 30m to the bus stop home. The meeting point has a supermarket and numerous takeaways around it. The route is direct, beautiful, offroad and easy to navigate. 5/5!.
