Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

26 Aug 2023I walked this route in August starting at North Wingfield. From the obelisk feature the route heads for the pavement of the main road (A6175), and then after a supermarket and filling station takes a line up the green space bordering a housing estate. At the end of this section the route continues as a path around the houses, rather than the obvious desire-line. There have been access issues here. The correct path follows the north side of the hedge. When the Five-Pits Trail is reached the route turns left (north) to reach Wolfie Pond. Turn right and follow the trail for several miles to the summit of Williamthorpe Wood. Here the route branches off onto a link path that heads down the side of the wood and then across the fields to Heath. On the main street turn left (north) until close to the church. The Elm Tree pub offers refreshments. From here the route heads steeply downhill, across the A617 and reaches an underpass beneath the M1. Heading north, we aim for the gap in the trees where there is a bridge over the ditch, and to a stile in the hedge nearby. The path heads diagonally down an arable field. When I walked the route this filed had been recently harrowed and rolled so there was no line. At the right-hand (east) end of a short hedge there is a bridge over the River Doe Lee. an obvious path heads ahead (east) to meet the surfaced Stockley Trail. Here the route turns left (north) and follows the good path for half a mile, before heading east up the side of the fishing pond. The path becomes a tarmac road (Water Lane) at the car park and this is followed ahead (Main Street (shops) and Carr Vale Lane) until the T junction with New Station Road. Here cross the road and turn right to quickly reach and turn uphill along Castle Lane, which becomes Castle Street and enters the market place to reach the hub.
