Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

29 Aug 2022A pleasant start and end, but a section in the late middle feels like pedestrians were an afterthought.
This slow way takes you a long an A road and crosses two slip roads with a larger A road which has no signals. This bit of the route is particularly unpleasant.
Negatives aside, it does get you from Musselburgh to Tranent, and the pavement quality is fine to good most of the way. There's a small dirt path towards the end that wheelchair users may find challenging.

19 Mar 2022This is the most direct route between these towns. I cant say I enjoy walking it but given my reservations about mustra2 I feel I should recommend it. As the other review indicates the section down the old post road can be muddy as used by mountain bikes (although the path is metalled underneath) , and the route along the A199 is by an increasingly busy road with constant traffic between 8 and 8. There are shops and cafes at both ends but only a couple of local shops in Wallyford ( and not near the route). TBH if you were keen to walk between these towns I d suggest going via Prestonpans (Muspre1, Pretra1) and otherwise the regular buses are £1.70 and you can find interesting ways to walk into Musselburgh on the Musselburgh paths network .

08 Aug 2021A practical route between Musselburgh and Tranent that is mainly flat and avoids main roads where possible. The mid section involves walking alongside the A199 but there is a proper pavement and it felt safe; I had no difficulties in crossing main roads, where this was needed. A section of the Old Post Road coming into Tranent is a very narrow footpath (see photo) which was fine to walk single file but would not be suitable for ‘wheelers’. An alternative route would be to keep going along the A199 (Edinburgh Road) instead. Overall, this was a pleasant walk. There are decent public toilets in both Musselburgh and Tranent, close to the route.
