Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

September 2023. Direction: Musselburgh to Prestonpans.

A nice bracing walk along the coast with some excellent wildlife viewing. As a visitor to the area, it was also nice to see some of the local history shown along the way. Easy to navigate partly along the John Muir Way / National Cycle Network 76.

A nice route, particularly picturesque as you approach Prestonpans.

This route is fine but there are alternatives. The part from the Morrison's Haven car park to Prestonpans is very pleasant. The route largely follows the John Muir Way, which is well signposted. In Prestonpans it is possible to walk above the beach but this is not recemmended at high water, particularly if a nor' easterly gale is blowing! Prestonpans is an interesting village noted for its public art such as murals. The Prestoungrange Gothenburg is a characterful pub with its own microbrewery. It is still run on the original Gothenburg principles with most of the profits going back into the community. When I walked this route the end point was a building site as the war memorial square was being renovated.

A pleasant straightforward route between Musselburgh and Prestonpans that largely avoids roads and is flat and easy to walk. A small section of the footpath (that runs parallel to the B1348 and is part of the John Muir Way) is quite narrow and was a little overgrown when I went, so may not be suitable for ‘wheelers’ but presents no difficulties to walkers. It would be possible to walk alongside the road instead.
