Description

A hillier alternative to Mitcro One. A mix of urban and common land, this route goes across the middle of Mitcham Common - with ups and downs and some great views. Can be soft/wet/muddy in places.
About 50/50 on road/footpath; the approach into Croydon stays on the main London Road, rather than going down the side road (Handcroft Road, through Broad Green, which is the Mitcro One route), as I found the lively London Road preferable to the side road when I tried this route out

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked this on a slightly overcast afternoon, from Croydon to Mitcham. It hadn't rained a lot.

Really, a route of two parts. The first part is along the very busy commercial streets of Croydon. I am not a fan, as it makes for slow walking. It wasn't *bad* though. After leaving the busy shopping streets, a small section through some alleyways (photo #1) (with fly-tipping and cats, photo #2) you end up going along/through Croydon Cemetery.

After that, part two takes you along (and up) Mitcham Common, with some good views (photo #3), grass, and a bunch of crows (photo #4). You then ascend and descend Mill Hill. On the way down, there was a lovely lake covered over with ice (photo #5). There were a few muddy paths here (photo #6).

The last (short) section takes you along Commonside East into Mitcham (photo #7).

One part OK, the other part Great.

Well mapped, enjoyable overall, and likely as good a MitCro route could be. Thanks Jane!

I started in Croydon and it was a long stretch of fairly busy roads, but busy with pedestrians rather traffic. I was a bit bored towards the end, but thats just personal taste. It was interesting at first and definitely easy to navigate. And I enjoyed the gradual dimuendo from turning off on Canterbury Road until coming out onto surprisingly peaceful and wild Mitcham Common. The common is quite open and doesn't have lots of little side paths like many urban wildspaces so fairly easy to navigate, which I'd been a little apprehensive about. This route may be hillier than MitCro 1 but don't be concerned, these are mere bumps in comparison to the "Croydon Hills" further south.

Walked Croydon to Mitcham.
Overall a good route for the area, connecting two urban centres in south London. There’s an especially green section across Mitcham Common where the urban pressures really melt away.

Leaving Croydon it’s a busy lively route with shops and people getting on with business.
Then I turned off the main strip, and after a short section of residential roads I was into mostly paths and common all the way to Mitcham.
Mitcham Common was a big surprise - large enough to get lost, ups and downs, and altogether this section makes a memorable route.

Paths are mixed - urban pavements, footpaths and some steep, some uneven, and when I walked some soggy muddy patches on the Common.
There’s also some bike barriers.
Both Croydon and Mitcham have plentiful refreshment opportunities.
