Description
This route removes a couple of problem sections from Marknew one. A more natural way off the canal is given, a definitely public route is taken in Sutton, and a new, simpler and safer, way is used into Newport. This part of the route uses local knowledge to follow a permissive path alongside the old canal, which is mainly in water. This part of the route is undisputed and very well walked by locals. This also gives a neat top and tail to the route, finishing alongside a canal, much as the route started

03 Nov 2023A biased review by the originator. This is just a tweaking of Marknew one to improve the way into Newport and make a couple of tiny adjustments. The first 8.5 miles give easy navigation but 8 miles along a sometimes muddy towpath may not appeal to all. It is interesting and scenic. The cross field paths were in the main waymarked and easy to find , but this was autumn when the crops were down. Careful map reading is needed around Weston Jones, Some of the stiles and bridges need a degree of agility. It is quite pleasing to start on a working canal and finish on a disused one.
