Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

The great advantage of this route is that it is very direct, although more than half of it is along roads. It isn't the most exciting, but it does the job well, and I'd definitely walk it again.

The exit path from Marshfield departs the village via a little grassy passage between two buildings and to the right of the nursery/holiday club (see photo below) before emerging on the verge of the A420. Take care as this is a fast road. Turn right for a few metres towards the road sign and you will see your ongoing path on the other side of the carriageway into the field corner opposite. It is a safe enough crossing point because the sightlines are good.

The next kilometre or so is through arable crop. The path is signed and the farmer had recently mowed a clear route through the expanses of standing wheat and barley. Eventually you reach a hedge and walk along a field headland before arriving in a slightly weedy corner to exit over a stone wall under a thorn tree.

There follows two straightish miles along a quiet minor road to the hamlet of West Kington. Sometimes the main view is only of the roadside hedges but there are more often wider views around over arable fields surrounded by stone walls, with a big sky overhead. Then, after a curve downhill into West Kington, it is all change as the Slow Way takes a paved path uphill to the church where it picks up and shares the more variable route of Marbur one.

From now on the route is more off-road, first making its way around the yards and access road of a farmstead to join a footpath along the edges of horse pastures to Nettleton Green. I was approached by a couple of curious but calm young ones, but most were utterly uninterested in me, and there were some very pretty foals around. After various footpaths and road corners, the last few hundred metres into Burton is fully on-road again. The village has a pub and a farm shop/cafe which seemed a popular destination on a Saturday.
