Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

18 Feb 2024Total length is approximately 16mi. Starting from Manningtree the route is on footpaths, tracks and quiet country lanes with no stiles to climb over. The A120 at Wix is a fast and busy road so some caution is needed. The route at Wix is on the main road which is lined with hedgerows and a narrow verge. Thankfully there is a parallel footpath south of Wix to avoid this. There is also an issue with the footpath east of Wix playing field. It has been ploughed by the farmer so it’s not obvious where to go - this may not be an issue in the summer when there are crops in the field. I took an alternative by walking to the main road and east to the war memorial. From here is an access track (footpath sign missing) which runs along the edge of the ploughed field and rejoins the route.
There is a village pub and shop at Wix. After this I didn’t come across anywhere to stop for food and drink until Kirby
At Beaumont there is also a better route keeping off the busy main road (B1414). From Wix road there is a footpath that heads south and then east across the B1414, staying south of the reservoirs and then rejoining the route. This is a high point in the walk and the view down the hill to Landermere Wharf is beautiful (there are some benches here to admire the view).
After Beaumont quay the route is atop the river wall. In some places this is overgrown with brambles but there is an alternative path below the bank.
At Kirby I recommend The Ship for something to eat and drink.
