Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

The first part of this route is just paths through housing estates and round the back of Tesco. But once past Bearsted golf course, everything opens up.

Part of the new Augustine Camino, this is not a route for the faint hearted. It's tricky to find the route at times and it's tough going.

You climb to the top of the North Downs, with multiple, very steep ascents and descents on some well maintained routes.

But the effort is rewarded. Bluebells (in April) and wildlife everywhere. I almost bumped into a fox coming the other way.

Tremendous sense of fulfilment when you complete - this route is the equivalent of a 3 course meal.

And

31 May 2021 Spring

I walked this from Maidstone to Hucking in 2 stages.
The first section from Maidstone Museum to Bearsted Golf course was reasonable , straightforward for most walkers and possibly wheelers however I missed a short section near Hockers Lane ( the path entrance was up a private drive though was actually accessible. From Bearsted Golf course the route was only really suitable for walkers and if allowances made by the walker it is satisfactory but poor in terms of not being direct enough and involves gates and steps. The second section from Bearsted golf Course is increasingly steep , and uneven with some stony muddy and uneven paths requiring walking boots to avoid turned ankles etc. The good points are the great views from the top of the Downs and generally quietness of the route .
