Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Hiking Historian
15 Dec 2023A good route, with a mixture of towpaths, footpaths and paved roads.
From Maghull (shops, pubs, transport links), we're straight onto the canal with a mix of earth and tarmac towpaths. Through Maghull, it becomes gradually more rural, until we leave past Melling, crossing a small bridge and up a farmtrack. Near the end, at the junction, we turn onto another footpath running across the fields. It narrows at the end into a footpath between fences.
At the end, we cross the road to join another footpath. Again between fences, before opening up as a green track alongside a pond. We join the pavement ahead, before moving through a pinchgap onto a residential estate.
A couple of road walks follow, with good pavements, before we head into Mill Dam Park. Past the playground on tarmac footpaths, a footbridge then a slope or steps to the houses above. A few more roads, before we join a tarmac footpath across Tower Hill Park.
Once through the park, we're onto roads once more: residential, then into the countryside along Stopgate Lane. The pavement narrows in places, but is passable and safe.
Past the fisheries, farmtracks across good countryside. Once past the farm, we join The Coach Road, which is tarmacced in places and wooded. A few junctions along farmtracks bring us to the A570, where we cross (carefully!), and along a footpath into the centre of Rainford.
A good route with good paths, but definitely foot-only.
