Description
Essentially the same as Luthit One but more accurately mapped, with appropriate road crossings, paths as they are on the ground, not on the map, and a shorter greener end at Hitchin.
Some OS rights of way go across fields, expect these to change slightly as the crops change and the farmer ploughs a different way

Strider
31 May 2024I walked from Luton to Hitchin.
From the station is a long road out of the town, up hill and 12% a lot of the way. This potentially monotonous road is made interesting by its rapid transition from A road to B road to C road to lane to track to path, ever changing land use and scenery. City centre to singing skylarks and soaring swifts.
From the high point in quaint Mangrove Green you can see the path straight across the valley 2.5km to the chalk hill on the other side, lovely views. I felt I crossed a sea as the wind blew waves across the fields of barley.
Through small woods to farm tracks and common land to Great Offley where the gastro pub The Red Lion seems an ideal place for lunch. Narrow paths and a yew lined track took me to a path overlooking the slow decent towards Hitchin. Hedge lined paths and wood side tracks, also paths across open fields take you to the outskirts of the town. Across a footbridge to a small wood and onto a busy road. Then a cut-through behind houses and small roads back to the busy road; this is the town centre. An unavoidable roadside walk takes you a short distance to the railway station.
A varied walk with lots to see. Suburban geography to open vistas across farmed valleys. Paths are generally good and easy to navigate , some short road walking in very quiet places, some steps, narrow through the crops and steep in places, kissing gates.
A thoroughly good walk.
