Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

04 Jul 2023 Summer

Beautiful walk with a variety of terrain and views!

We started this walk from Keswick and chose this option after seeing windy forecasts at the summits of Lowkes One.

The walk takes you briefly through the streets and fields from Keswick and Braithwaite, and then through the valley between Grisedale Pike and Causey Pike. The path is well maintained and the views as you get to Force Crag mine are stunning, especially in the summer.

After passing Coledale Beck, you'll start a gradual incline up to Coledale Hause. After you follow the path west, you'll descend along Liza Beck on a path that is slightly trickier underfoot. It's quite rocky and sometimes the path slightly erodes, so, while it's not technically difficult, care is required.

Once you cross the footbridge, the going to Loweswater is straightforward. We took a detour in Lainthwaite Wood to go by Crummock Water and have dinner. Gorgeous and worth the extra time!

Some things to note:
- There is a screenshot of the route going behind some houses on a corridor. In the summer, this could be overgrown as it was for us and pretty impassable. We diverted back to the road to as shown in blue.
- At Braithwaite, rather than following the route indicated in the summer, continue along the bend of the road and join a wider track farther north. Where the route has been mapped here is OK, but you'll be fighting through quite a bit of bracken and narrow path.
- As mentioned, this route requires some incline walking and rocky terrain. In wet weather, have good shoes with grip.
- Not accessible for wheels due to terrain.
