Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is a lovely route marred by a horrendous inaccuracy at the north end of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. It expects you to fly/abseil 30 metres/100 feet between the valley floor and the aqueduct towpath. LlaChi Three is the corrected version.

Fantastic route from start to finish. Was raining hard when I completed it but still fully accessible. Canal towpaths make for easy navigation and good conditions underfoot. Lots of heritage to take in enroute. There is a nice cafe in the old chapel in Pontcysyllte. Would recommend a torch for the tunnels as these are surprisingly dark.

Beautiful views of the Rivers Dee and Ceiriog and their valleys, two aqueducts with great views make it special.

This is an easy walk along a canal tow path - flat and easy to navigate with great views of the surrounding hills. It’s also a cycle route. The only issues are for anyone with an extreme fear of the dark or of heights: the path goes through the 174m long Whitehouse Tunnel and over the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Really enjoyed this walk along the canal - very little navigation actually needed!
There is step free entry at both Chirk and Llangollen, although it is very steep at the end. The trail starts as the canal emerges from a tunnel, follows it over the Aqueduct and on into Llangollen. The Aqueduct is NOT for the faint hearted... i'ts very high, and the railings are quite well spaced. A slight diversion will give you step free access at this point. (I did not exactly follow the given route at this point. It requires you to lose a lot of height and gain it again. Following the signposts to 'Llangollen' works just as well, and takes you past a path offering a view of the aqueduct).
The butty boat just after the aqueduct did a good bacon sandwich and a piece of homemade cake.
The path is a well maintained canal towpath, solid underfoot but expect mud/puddles in places when it is raining.
Decent options for eating/drinking/toilets at either end, and a couple of pubs along the way.
