Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A very relaxing way to go. The vast majority is along the predominantly wooded towpath of the Llangollen Canal with a very short walk through the town in Llangollen and a slightly longer walk along the pavement past Chirk Station to the meeting place in Chirk. The highlight has to be the walk across the UNESCO wonder which is the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Not only is this a flat and easy to follow stroll along a beautiful route amidst the Vale of Llangollen, there are also places to stop along the way. The Sun Trevor, where we went, does food and excellent local ales. Pontcysyllte has a number of eateries and pubs, as well as public toilets. Froncysyllte has cafes and a pub. There are pubs, shops and cafes in Llangollen and Chirk. Transport-wise there are buses to Chirk and Llangollen and trains to Chirk. There is access to buses along the way at Trevor. A model Slow Way. Full marks!.

I completed this picturesque canal walk to Chirk with great company on a beautiful sunny day.

After finishing Llachi Two, we passed the preserved railway station on the River Dee to our left whilst continuing our walk onto Llachi Three.

The canal towpath was accessible and the surface was smooth, making the walk pleasant and easy going. Parts of this canal walk were quiet, making this a peaceful and serene walk.

The path treated us to spectacular views from the aqueduct. It was busy over the aqueduct and I don’t have a good head for heights but I managed okay. The aqueduct has railings with gaps between the rails.

The towpath goes through an unlit and long tunnel. Please be reassured that it has a wooden rail on the side to prevent you from falling into the canal. I would recommend bringing a torch.

Overall, this was a great walk with lovely views.

I walked this with two friends starting from Llangollen, having walked LlaChi Two first.
From a route walking point of view, it’s best to stay on the east side of the Dee bridge in Llangollen right at the start, but it was worth crossing it to look at the view of the water falls and the heritage railway station. To reach the towpath involved walking up a slope and two or three steps.
The towpath was generally well surfaced, and at the time the embankments were covered with wild garlic. There were also lovely glimpses of the Dee valley. There was a pub halfway to the aqueduct, and a visitor centre, toilets, pubs & cafés at Trevor and Froncysyllte. It was very busy with tourists on a sunny Saturday in April, at Llangollen and at the aqueduct, but the route south between the aqueduct and Chirk was really quiet, until we reached the end where the chocolate factory made its presence known, by smell as well as sound!
There was a tunnel along here too, for which a torch is recommended. The aqueduct itself is a little vertiginous and passing people walking the opposite direction should be done with care! There was a stepped footbridge over the small Trevor branch, although this could be avoided by continuing slightly further and crossing by road and coming back through the car park, where the toilets were.
This was a really picturesque, interesting, and easy walk, with a stunning landmark aqueduct at its heart.
