Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This is an enjoyable route which after relatively steep climbs at either end is surprisingly flat through the central section of the walk which follows the edge of the moor giving great views of the upper Calder Valley and across to Rochdale and Manchester.

There are a couple of access and routing issues however. Starting from Littleborough, on the path between Blackstone Edge Road and the A58 there was a locked gate which I had to climb - there may have been a way around this but I didn't spot it. The route then follows some footpaths just to the north of the A58. I couldn't find these on the ground and ended up re-tracing my steps and walking the short distance along the A58 (perfectly safe with a broad pavement) to the Moorcock Inn from where there is a bridleway to re-join this route.

From there the path is straightforward with a steep but relatively short climb up to Blackstone Edge Moor and the White House pub. The route then follows a section of the Pennine Way which is initially a gravel track servicing the reservoirs and then a narrow, flagged path across the moor. At Withens Gate the route turns right joining the Calderdale Way and begins the descent via Withens Clough Reservoir to Cragg Vale. Note that the GPX file uses a path which descends directly to the reservoir - this is extremely rough and very boggy in places. A better alternative is to bear left, sticking to the Claderdale Way which reaches the reservoir slightly further along the shore.
