03 Aug 2024If you walk from Levens to Kendal parking is a bit of a problem. However, the lady at Levens village shop is a star and will advise on the current situation with bits of closed road and water lorries. In addition, the shop has a brilliant selection of useful items including maps and useful things for cyclists and walkers. Other than this the walk is straightforward. Don't panic if the bagot goats are sitting on the path - just give them a wide berth.
There is food available at Levens Hall and the shop and the toilets are free.
You might want to consider the bus services if you want to use them as it may influence which day you do the walk and which direction you do it in.

22 Oct 2021After walking up quiet village roads, an obvious footpath leads across two fields to a farm bridge over the A590. This may be a bit muddy and there is evidence of cows. A pavement along the A6 and over the River Kent leads to the entrance to the pleasant footpath through Levens Hall Deer Park, then a quiet road crosses the A590 again. Here the Lancaster Canal Trail is joined which leads all the way into Kendal.
The canal is derelict and de-watered here, but there are lots of interesting remains, in good condition, such as bridges over grassy fields, and a splendid skew aqueduct at Sedgwick. (A short diversion south from the A590 bridge would take you to Hincaster Tunnel and Horsepath, both Scheduled Monuments. The Lancaster Canal Trust is hoping to restore all of the derelict section from Tewitfield to Kendal. See their website for further information.)
The route is well waymarked, straightforward, well used, interesting, and beautiful. The last section through suburban Kendal (less beautiful but still interesting) passes the sports centre, the castle, and some industrial areas. Originally, the canal ended with a basin surrounded by warehouses which are still present, bounded by suitably named roads – Canal Head North and Canal Head South.
