Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

04 Feb 2024Like so many this is a very mixed walk, urban streets offer a decent exit from Stocksbridge then a well used level waterside path with a good surface to a half way inn at Midhopestones. A quiet section of road then a short section of real field paths. I do like Sheffield signs that explain that a Public Footpath is Walkers only. Cattle unlikely but some mud uneven surfaces and stiles to climb. Services at Langsett but no onward transport except on Saturday.
I walked from Stocksbridge climbing as always from this valley town. The streets are quiet and views interesting, at times over the rooftops of houses and gardens with the steelworks filling the valley floor ever present.
A rapid and pleasant change from urban to country unlike some routes that take us along rubbish strewn alleyways. The well used path alongside Underbank, the first of many reservoirs in this area, it offers a good surface and at time close to the edge of the water which was lapping at the overflow. A good easy walk.
Reaching the road it would be possible to head north across the A616 and pick up the part excellent track used by Lanpen. Unfortunately the final approach is Langsett is not yet complete and the available path is poor. Ye Olde Mustard Pot is about half way but had not opened for the day as I passed. This section of road is very quiet so feet are able to look after themselves allowing the eyes to wander and take in the fine views.
We only see the dam and spillway of Midhope reservoir all labelled as IRE (can’t find what that is the acronym for). Then after a path along the steep slope to the Little Don we share the road over the dam of Langsett Reservoir, sorry IRE, to reach the hamlet of Langsett with it’s extrovert tea shop opposite the Inn that does B&B. I also report on the cabin with seats that can only be accurately described as a bus shelter on a Saturday, no mid week or Sunday services stop here. A good walk.

01 Nov 2023 (edited 02 Nov 2023)Walked from Langsett to Stocksbridge. An enjoyable and direct route. A few steps and stone stiles so not wheel friendly.
The Langsett meeting point is at the Waggon & Horses pub on the south side. So the first decision is whether to cross the main road twice or to risk walking a few yards on the south side (there is a pavement opposite). We soon leave the main road right, following Midhope Cliff Lane over the dam of the Langsett Reservoir - there is a pavement on the west side but parts of it were under water yesterday. Beyond the dam the pavement ends and we stay on the road to reach a signposted footpath left, which is indistinct through the first field but becomes clearer as it descends through the woods by the Little Don river (this path has steps and stone step stiles and there is a section where care may be needed when wet as it traverses halfway up a fairly steep bank). We then climb up and cross more fields to join a farm track (Dark Lane) and a very quiet road (Midhope Hall Lane) which we follow past the church to the junction at Ye Olde Mustard Pot - a large pub.
Here we cross the road and turn left down the hill to find the permissive path sharp right, which could easily be missed in this direction. This is a wide compacted gravel track that goes through trees and past an activity centre to reach the Underbank Reservoir dam, from which most of the route into Stocksbridge is on pavements (apart from a paved path with a few steps that goes from Cross Lane down to Churchill Road.

12 Mar 2023This amended route is very clear and accurate, an excellent way to walk from Langsett to Stocksbridge. The route (mostly) avoids roads and provides extensive views.
