20 Nov 2022I walked this route on a lovely sunny November day from Carnforth to Lancaster. Apart from short sections at either end, the route couldn’t be easier; it’s canal towpath all the way. This does make it longer than other options, especially as the canal contours above the Lune valley and over the magnificent Lune Aqueduct. However, it is all very accessible (although with short slopes and a short, cobbled section), and wheelable by most I would think. The towpath surface is all tarmac, partly broken down, or fine gravel.
The plotting is a bit inaccurate, and while the route is obvious along the canal, it could perhaps be a bit clearer at the ends. From the Carnforth end, there are traffic lights where it says Liby on the OS Map, at the entrance to the big Tesco, which is the best place to cross the A6. From there it is a short distance to the car park for the Canal Turn pub, which opens onto the towpath.
At the Lancaster end, the first bit of canalside walking is not on the towpath, but alongside a new apartment block. From the multiple pelican crossings where the A6 crosses the canal, there is a cobbled road/footpath next to the car park. This is the start point.
At Bolton-le-Sands there is a pub that can be accessed from the towpath, and also a supermarket. At Hest Bank there is a canalside pub, and a short distance off the path down by the sea, there is a shoreside (marsh not beach!) café, and a micropub next to the level crossing. There are benches and picnic tables near the middle of the route. At the outskirts of Lancaster, where the A6 crosses the canal, there is a café at the St John’s Hospice. The centre of Lancaster (and also Carnforth) has lots of facilities.
This was a lovely easy relaxing walk, and I don’t know any other places where you get a canalside view of the sea, with mountains beyond! And sometimes kingfishers!.

27 Jun 2021This is an easy route with no obstructions and utilizes the canal towpath for most of the way. The route takes a direct line on the pavement of the A6 street (other street options are possible) up to a major road junction and crosses using the pedestrian lights to the entrance of the canal-side path. This leads directly onto the canal towpath via a couple of short cobbled sections (steps and slope options). The surface of the towpath is firm and flat through to Carnforth where there is a short road (with pavement) section to the town centre. The stretch of towpath in Lancaster is relatively quiet and pleasantly green with plenty of trees. It is popular with walkers. The route crosses the River Lune via the Lune Aqueduct and proceeds north through countryside and then semi-urban environments with plenty of birds, wild flowers and views of Morecambe Bay and the Lakeland hills across to be seen.
