Description

This fixes the problems of LakGra One. It also makes two improvements. Firstly, leaving Lakeside, there is a footpath through the woods above the road, which is much nicer to follow than the road. Secondly, it goes close to the top of Hampsfell, which involves a little bit more climbing, but follows a well-trodden path and has spectacular views

I walked this route in a southerly direction. It starts with a pretty woodland path alongside and sometimes above the road to Newby Bridge (where there is a useful bus stop), although there is still some road walking necessary. The road to Hazelrigg is very quiet, and becomes a gravel track to Field End, and then a grassy track alongside a dry-stone wall. At one point this gets boggy but there are planks laid to ease this. Other bits are muddy too. There is then a wiggly path through woods and across a wild field; the wiggles nicely avoid the bog. Just before Seatle farm buildings the path is signposted up steps through a hedge to go around the back of the buildings. This is correctly shown on the OS map but it would be easy to miss the signpost!
From here there is a B-road section, but it is fairly quiet. You see the church spire ahead which you need to pass before turning onto another quiet road. At this point there is what looks like a former bus shelter, now home to swallows or swifts. Only the last short road section, marked “The Level”, is busier, but there are good sightlines and the drivers were very considerate.
This is followed by a farm lane then a climb through fields up onto Hampsfell. The views from up here reward the climb, and the paths are well trodden and easy to follow. I strongly recommend a short diversion to the viewpoint marked Hospice. There are myriad paths in this area, and down through Eggerslack Wood to the B-road to Grange-over-Sands Station.
Grange Station is rather lovely, with a view of Morecambe Bay directly next to it. There are lots of cafés in Grange, and the Hazelmere is the closest and the best – so popular that you may have to queue!
This was generally a very enjoyable walk, only slightly marred by being 46% road. The road is mostly very quiet though, with considerate drivers (they’re used to walkers in the Lake District).

Note that the Lakeside end of this route could now be done using the lovely new gravel path between Lakeside and Newby Bridge, built in 2023. See Laklev Three.
