Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

It promised so much, but there are chunks of this that are impossible.

Almost straight from the off, the route fails. Once we've left the centre of Kirkby, we get to the footpath at Millbrook School, which is also marked on OS maps. Unfortunately, this starts past the school gate, and runs right into a locked gate at the rear of the main building, so that's a no.

Once into Millbrook Millennium Green, the footpath is supposed to run alongside the river Alt, but this is often boggy, so it's best to use the higher tarmac path.

The next section brings us into Tower Hill, and the route ahead has been obliterated by the new Headbolt Lane station building works. The footpath under the road bridge no longer exists, but there's a new footpath that runs close to the original course.

Once through Tower Hill and onto Stopgate Lane, but things really go wrong here. The footpath to Grayson's Farm is supposed to here, but there's a locked gate, no signs and no trace of any used path across the ploughed out fields. And where the footpath between Grayson's Farm and High Barn Farm are supposed to merge, it is blocked.

The path beyond Voces Farm is overgrown or flooded (the landowner admitted nature won!), and past the horse paddocks, the only way ahead is to climb a leaning, buttresed fence. Past the sewage works (over an overgrown footbridge), the exit to the road appears to be an electric fence, so had to use the service road for the sewage works.

The rest is glorious, though, and I've kept that in the replacement.
