Description
KIRHUC2 is a pretty good route, but it misses a couple of tricks, and since it is already snailed, I thought I could walk and submit a slightly shorter version, reflecting the paths that the locals use. It is stile and step free, but there is a short steep and slightly rough section just east of the A611 which may be enough to make it impossible for heavier wheelchairs and buggies

25 Jun 2023 (edited 26 Jun 2023)I walked this route from Hucknall to Kirkby on a hot and steamy summer Sunday. Much of the route has tree cover, and apart from a short steep and slightly rough section east of Derby Road in Annesley, it is entirely on good paths or pavements, and is entirely free of steps and stiles. Very enjoyable.
From Hucknall station, we cross the car park on the footpath, which is marked in red, turn right up Ashgate Road and use the pelican crossings to cross to the left side of Linby Road. We turn left along Blatherwick Close to find the alleyway that goes almost straight to Linby Walk. We take the path right between the Ranges country park and the railway to Wighay Road, where we cross and turn right over the level crossing. At the roundabout we take the old railway path/cycletrack left, which takes us easily to the edge of Freckland Wood. From here the shortest route takes the good track left past Newstead station, joins a surfaced road and crosses the railway on another level crossing.
We pass through Newstead village on residential roads and paths, turning right at Hucknall Road and right again up Moseley Road. Beyond the houses a path continues, and we take a concessionary shortcut on a well cut path across the fields that cuts a corner of the right of way. We then turn left up through the wood on a path that is a little narrow, rough and steep in places to reach Derby Road, which can be crossed on a pelican crossing. We head across and down Nottingham Road, which has good views across the valley. The first corner can be cut using a surfaced path. We turn right along Grives Lane to find another old railway path/cycletrack that follows a green corridor most of the way into Kirkby. The shortest route to the meeting point uses Cobden Street and Hodgkinson Road to reach Station Street, where the meeting point is a short distance right. Or turn right off the railway path a little earlier and use the path through the park to reach Hodgkinson Road.
For a direct suburban route, this is mostly very green, and the paths are mostly very easy, so full marks from me.
