Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

14 Nov 2022Review of SlowWays Route Kircum one (Kirkintilloch to Cumbernauld)
I walked this route in reverse (i.e. from Cumbernauld to Kirkintilloch) in November 2022. It is a long route but mostly easy to follow and to negotiate. However there is a pavement-less section along a busy road which could be dangerous for some users. The route begins in Cumbernauld town centre (a large, enclosed shopping mall) and the first challenge is to navigate up and down the levels in order to exit into the open air. From this point it is clear that Cumbernauld has been designed with car-less travel in mind. The route follows a network of paths which skilfully avoid, skirt round, go over or go under the many roads that have to be negotiated. Some points are a little unclear from the map but the route “on the ground” is usually fairly obvious. The route also makes good use of some green spaces including Ravenswood Playing Fields and Broadwood Loch. As the route leaves Cumbernauld it starts to follow much busier roads. At first there is a good pavement and then a wide, mown grass verge. However from the railway crossing near the Twechar Roundabout to the edge of Twechar itself, there is no pavement at all. The only way the section can be navigated is by walking carefully along the edge of the road and hopping onto the rough verge whenever a vehicle approaches. The road is a busy one with a 60mph speed limit and quite a lot of heavy vehicles (there is a cement works nearby). There appears to be no alternative to this section. I managed it alright (and therefore feel able to provisionally recommend it) but it would definitely not be safe for some users. The final part of the route is an easy one through the village of Twechar and then along a section of the towpath next to the Forth and Clyde Canal, arriving close to the centre of Kirkintilloch.
