Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

27 Dec 2023An easy route to follow. If you’re looking for spectacular views, this isn’t the walk for you. If you like industrial heritage, this is the perfect walk for you. This mostly follows the route of the Trent and Mersey Canal. There is one muddy point, but most paths and the towpath are firm.

04 May 2022This route is inaccurate as a section of it needs to be on the other side of the canal. It would cause problems particularly if walking from Stoke-on-Trent northwards.

20 Feb 2022I walked this from Kidsgrove and managed to follow it as far south as Etruria but then sadly between SJ 8670 4792 and SJ 8686 4751 it wanted to put me on the wrong side of the canal. This wasn't quite so critical from the north as it is obvious that you can not continue along the west bank and need to move across. However, I know from bitter experience that if you approach from the south you can follow the towpath on the wrong side and then have to go back on yourself or have to leave the canal completely. Too innacurate to pass this Slow Way.

26 Apr 2021A very cultural walk among the industrial heritage of Stoke-on-Trent. If you walk from Stoke, you will be along the canal up to Harecastle tunnel, after this, you will have to leave the canal (as you cannot go any further) and exit onto the main road (it is not so much fun), but it is worth walking as far as Kidsgrove as it is a nice little town with some interesting features, especially Victoria Hall.
Between Stoke and Harecastle, you will come across Middleport Pottery, where you can enjoy the museum, Burleigh factory shop, and an outstanding café before carrying on. Coming from Stoke and going towards Kidsgrove, and a mile after Middleport Pottery, there is the beautiful Westport Lake and, if you're lucky, the oatcake boat may be there and it will be their pleasure to sell you this very local delicacy.
