Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

27 Mar 2023Amended route due to original now being blocked. That said, this route is still foot-only, given some insurpassable obstacles along the way.
From Irlam station, we have a choice: following the pavement down to the main road; or along a stone and earth footpath through Station Park and its history and art installations, although this does involve steps. Once over the main road, at the end of a short sideroad, we access Linear Park. A beautiful wooded area that runs alongside the railway, it is an earthern path, with some muddy areas and a handful of dips and climbs, but nothing strenuous.
The path ends on the A57, where we join the pavement, which has ramps at crossings. At the roundabout, we cross towards Irlam Locks. A short footpath between wall and fence brings us to the footbridge over the locks and over the Manchester Ship Canal. Once over, we take a left past a barrier and down an unpaved road. Eventually, near houses, it becomes paved, and we turn into a residential estate. After a couple of turns, we join another footpath: an unpaved track running to a farm; a turning onto a earth (and mud) path; then, once through a gate, across a field and onto a long footpath running alongside the railway embankment.
On reaching a housing estate, the route goes under a railway bridge, before turning onto a residential road. A few turns, and down a back alley, we cross the road and join an earth footpath running past Flixton station. On an embankment, there are a couple of stiles. After the last one, over a bridge, around a football pitch, before crossing another road and through a park, between the main railway and a miniature track. A couple more earthern footpaths behind some houses before joining the main road and ending at Urmston station.
A good route connecting two sites on either side of the Ship Canal. Good transport links at either end, and there's shops, garages and, especially in Urmston, lots of cafés and restaurants.
