Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route yesterday from Redditch. It's a good route with a steep incline in whichever direction you choose to walk it. The route from Redditch does have more descent overall. If the rights of way in a couple of places were not overgrown, I would have possibly given it five stars. Unfortunately the lack of maintenance let it down.

The first section which docked a star was the section around Astwood Hill Farm. When you reach the farm, the waymarkers have been removed necessitating use of the GPS to navigate the route through. Photo 7 shows the mapped route through a farm yard which thankfully was clear of livestock when I did the walk. However, if it was full, I spotted a route around the farm buildings I would have used instead.

Immediately after leaving the farm behind, on the other side of the field is a gate onto Crofts Lane. Use this gate to get onto the lane despite there being a right of way in the field running parallel to the lane. When I got to the other side of the field, the stile out of it was so overgrown (photo 8) I had to retrace my steps back to the gate and walked along the lane instead. Of course, the overgrown stile might not be so bad in winter/spring.

The other particularly overgrown section was south of Feckenham, between the woods next to Feckenham Wylde Moor and Brandon Brook (photo 12 & 13). This made me remove another star from my rating. A real shame as otherwise a great walk, and again perhaps might not be so bad at other times of the year.

There is a pub at Feckenham for refreshments (Rose & Crown) and the route has a good deal of stiles, gates, footbridges, steps and fences to negotiate. I would do it again as the views from the high points are impressive, but i'd recommend it for times of the year where vegetation isn't so abundant.
