Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

16 Oct 2023A fantastic route through a variety of landscapes and habitats, on good paths and with a good mix of popular trails and more remote walking.
I took the Dales Way bus service to the Sun Inn to start (be sure to tell the driver, as most passengers are continuing to one of the reservoirs proper) which is a great link service. The walk down to Swinsty and around the perimeter is a mix of lovely mature woodland and access paths, popular with dog walkers and families.
The path over to Timble is clear, gradual and crosses through classic Nidderdale fields, and then through a dry-stone walled track, up to the outskirts of the village. From here to the crossroads is along road, but it is quiet with wide verges, and great views across Nidderdale (including the 'golf balls' at RAF Menwith Hill).
I'd walked the path from Timble Ings across Askwith Moor before and knew it was straightforward to follow (not the case for all paths on that moor!) Soon the view down to Ilkley opens up and you can see a good swathe of Wharfedale as you start to descend to Denton.
n.b. on my walk, the stepping stones crossing of the Wharfe from Denton Road was impassable due to one having been lost/in need of repair. I don't think the route should be altered as this is such a delightful addition to it, but in the case of the crossing not being possible, one needs to follow Denton Road east and cross at the footbridge nearer Olicanians CC. If aware ahead of time and wanting to cut out as much of this road walking, one could go from Denton to Middleton and descend through Stubham Wood to the crossing.
The rest of the walk into Ilkley is very pleasant and the town is a great place to enjoy some deserved refreshment.

19 Apr 2022Really enjoyed walking this route, especially the stepping stones over the river. I 100% recommend this route. There's some walking down quiet lanes, but that was welcome after lots of walking on uneven ground earlier in our day.

19 Apr 2022I really enjoyed walking this route. I'd definitely walk it again.
You can expect woods, a reservoir, quiet lanes, moorland, stepping stones, riverside paths and good views.
There were a few wet and muddy patches towards the south of Denton Moor on the day we walked this route, but nothing unexpected and our feet stayed dry.
I am sure there is a route that would be more accessible. Perhaps someone (local?) could add an additional route option for this Slow Way?.
