15 Jan 2023 (edited 16 Jan 2023)Walked from Ilkeston to Eastwood on a winter morning.
A good direct route, slightly spoiled by the narrow steps down to the canal at the Ilkeston end which mean it is not perfect for accessibilty. This problem could be avoided by joining the canal at Wash Meadows, but the best route from there into Ilkeston would need further investigation.
Leaving the square in Ilkeston, we head down East Street and Burr Lane to the footbridge over Chalons Way. A paved alleyway and a few more pavements take us down to the canal bridge on Station Street. Here we meet the only significant obstacle, as the route down to the canal is down a narrow staircase defended by bollards at the top. Once at canal level the towpath is initially on a tarmac surface, is shared with an access road for houses for a while, but beyond the Bennerley Viaduct the surfaced path narrows and disappears into mud in places (not too slippery, and no real problems even when everything around was very wet). We leave the canal on Long Lane, then use a short section of the disappearing Nottingham Canal, leaving it on a good track which leads to Newmansley Road and the easy pavement walk into Eastwood (note that at the top of Queens Road North there is a zebra crossing on the left over the busy Nottingham Road.

07 Feb 2022Good route on generally well made paths. A small diversion allows you to walk over Bennerley Viaduct which provides views up and down the Erewash valley.

04 Feb 2022I walked this route from Ilkeston to Eastwood in January. The exit from Ilkeston was on quiet roads with pavements. Once we joined the canal towpath it was easy walking. The entry to Eastwood is also on qquiet residential roads but steeply uphill. Very enjoyable.

26 Oct 2021I walked this route Eastwood to Ilkeston and what was forecast to be a dry and sunny Monday in late October. The route is well plotted and there are few if any limitations such as stiles or narrows. The surfaces vary from excellent to compacted earth. Much of the walk is alongside water and is available to cyclists. It passes close to Ilkeston rail station.
The exit from Eastwood is restricted by the need to use a safe crossing of the bypass. So this route is much the same as Heaeas, cars and dustbins are a standard hazard to pavement users. I could have taken the main street then along Church Street to ring the changes. Raleigh once a big employer and maker of bikes now has an import distribution depot here. Over the bypass and a short section of the disused Nottingham canal where a swing bridge still takes the path over the water.
The path beside the Erewash canal is shared with cyclists but I saw none on this Monday. With a hedge of sorts to one side and water on the other this path like many others has no escape route but here I don't have that feeling of being trapped.
From the bridge at Cotmanhay the path is hard surfaced and got a little busier. I was delighted to be able to explore the recently constructed ramp up to Bennerley Viaduct. Work continues on the decking so it's closed at present but this will eventually make an excellent link to Awsworth and Kimberley.
Another lock with lots of water spilling over the gates then a section of path shared with traffic to canalside properties. Soon after the new bridge that carried the bypass there is a path to the newish rail station. Here also a footbridge is signed to the town centre, this may offer a better route, but I didn't explore. I soon found that to leave the canal on this route is a flight of steps the only significant limitation of the route.
Twisting and turning through quiet streets the path arrives at the inner ring road. From here it's apparent what a scar it's made through Ilkeston. Soon the route enters the Market place at the head of Bath Street which would be the alternative approach via the shops.

18 Oct 2021Enjoyable route following the Erewash canal for the main part. Easy walking, good surfaces and minimal gradients. Following the route is straightforward. There are some "A frames" on the canal towpath which vary in width and are a bit awkward for wide handlebars.
